Hotel Los Lagos, Arenal
Hotel Los Lagos hot spring resort offers the largest property of the resorts in the Arenal area. Not only does it sit at the base of the volcano, it offers an included volcano observatory (a short drive up the road that leads through the property or a hearty 2.8 km uphill hike) which is one of the best viewing points for the Arenal volcano in the area.
Los Lagos offers a day pass option as well as on site lodging. You will find the lodging area for the resort by driving up the winding road that goes through the property. The rooms are spacious and comfortable - offering TV, air conditioning, mini-bar and bathroom with full sized shower and bathtubs. (Not to mention great views of the volcano.)
The most unique thing about Los Lagos is it's wildlife. The resort is a great place to bring kids and you can easily spend half a day walking through beautiful tropical gardens that lead to a colorful dart frog farm, butterfly farm and crocodiles. Take the bridge that brings you to the pool area to see the colorful Koi pond.
The resort has a large cold water pool with two different water slides. The other large pool is one with thermal waters, it also has a slide and a large swim up bar along with other little sitting areas that are perfect for soaking and enjoying a cocktail or two. Behind the two large pools are a variety of smaller little thermal pool areas where you can get away from sometimes busier larger pools.
There are two different restaurant options on site, Las Palmas which offers rainforest views and a wide variety of typical Costa Rican food as well as other international delights. It also offers Nahula Restaurant, which is a more intimate dining experience. Make sure you pay a visit to Lemnos Wet Bar which offers over 56 cocktails as well as natural tropical fruit beverages, soda beer and wine.
Los Lagos has it's very own onsite zip line. As you hang out at the pools, you can see people zip lining above you through canopy having the time of their lives. Los Lagos will also help you set up many of the other tours in the area, such as hiking or horseback riding.
Their Fangus spa offers services such as body wraps, manicures, reflexology and hot stone massages. They also have a small gift shop onsite.
Los Lagos is a fun resort for kids of all ages. I've visited many times with my children and it's a place I recommend to anyone visiting Costa Rica.
